I recently came across the book "Ancient Echoes: The Anasazi Book of Chants" by Mary Summer Rain and I became suspicious immediatly, just from the cover illustration, that it was Newage/ plastic shaman. I then looked through the "chants" and discovered a few things: first that there was no language (not even ONE WORD) that wasnt english; next that she claimed the Anasazi went on "star journeys" (a classic NewAge theme). But perhaps the most revealing to my knowledge was the supposed large role "crystals" played in Anasazi religion.
I have only heard of one native american tribe who attach any significance to quartz crystals - that they are extremely dangerous! (Sorry, dont remember the tribe, but I do remember it is in northern california)
Ignoring the topic of New Age in general, (unless you feel compelled) my question is this - what spiritual/religious significance, if any, do traditional natives give to quartz, etc.? Firsthand knowledge is greatly appreciated! (If specific knowledge among your people is closed to outsiders, a simple yes or no is fine.)

Re: crystals and native religions?
Fri, August 7, 2009 - 8:46 PMI don't know what other nations' experience is with this subject, and I have not seen the book to which you refer...but can tell you that "star journeys" are done within some nations. I am Mi'kmaq and our traditional teachings include the star lodge ceremony, as does the Comanche nation. these are very ancient ceremonies, not to be entered in to lightly. I believe they stem from the Annishnabeg, who we have been told are our original ancestors, the progenitors of all native nations.
As for the crystals....our teachings say yes they can dangerous without the proper teaching or knowledge...they should not be bothered, but left to sleep. Although not my experience, I have heard of healers using them, but only for intense healing efforts and again....not without the proper teaching and knowledge of how to do so and how to put them back to sleep.
Again these are very ancient teachings and many contemporary native people are unaware they exist...unless they follow the Medeowin teachings.

Re: crystals and native religions?
Sun, August 23, 2009 - 5:43 PMAs far as i can research it the tribe you might be talking about is the Lakota Sioux
It appears to be used as part of the Earth Web and Earth Signs and is part of an ancient ritual and belief of the Indian Spiritual world.
There is little written on it since many people still frown upon passing the belief system to outsiders.
Clear Quartz is the mineral totem for the Fast waterflow moon...March 11- April 10
It is known to enhance and clarify so it is a good representative of the energies of this time of year..
The crystal is clear bright and sparkling and has the ability to absorb and reflect the light.
